1If my garage door has 2 springs and one breaks, should I replace both?
Yes. The door springs on your garage door always need to be replaced as a pair. Once one of the springs has broken, the other is probably going to break soon as well. Springs get weaker with use, and both springs usually have the same rate of wear and tear. Also, installing a new spring with an older spring is likely to cause an imbalance in the door. If your garage has two doors, but only one spring has broken, then you should replace the springs on both doors. You should also be aware that depending on the position of the door a broken spring can damage the opener and may even cause injury.
2Can I change the broken springs or cable on my garage door myself?
You probably won’t be able to change the springs or cable yourself. It’s highly recommended that you use a professional for any garage door repairs. Torsion springs are under a high level of tension, and this means that they need a special adjustment tool. All the parts of the counterbalance system need to be maintained and replaced by a professional technician. This includes the spring, the cable, the cable drums, the corner brackets, and the tension spring centre bearing brackets. You may cause more damage to your garage door if you try to replace or repair these components yourself.
3What to do when your garage door will not complete a cycle (goes in reverse part of the way down)?
1. The first thing you need to do is move any object that may be obstructing the movement of the door. 2. Secondly, you should check the safety sensors, and make sure that they are in proper working condition. 3. Use the manual operation and feel for an obstruction. The door may feel light when you’re manually moving it up or down, but you should listen for excessive noise, weight or imbalance. 4. Do not increase the opener’s force. This puts more strain on the door opener and can cause damage to the gears or housing.
4What do I need to buy with my garage door springs?
You’ll need winding bars for your new torsion springs. The size you need will depend on the kind of springs you order. If you order springs that have the cones installed, you’ll need to know the size. If the inside diameter is 2-5/8”, then you’ll also need 1/2” diameter winding bars. Some cones will need other sizes of winding bar, so make sure that you have checked the size first. Most residential garage doors have springs that can be wound with bars that are 18” long. Other springs, duplex, or triplex sets that lift 200 or 300 pounds each should be wound with 24” bars instead. Springs that lift more than 300 pounds need 36” bars. The price of the winding bars does depend on the length you need, and the diameter of the bar. There are different shapes available but you’ll probably want a hexagonal bar. They’re helpful for garage doors, because they don’t roll. You may or may not need to order cables as well, but you should only replace cables that are frayed, gnarled, rusty or broken. You should also replace both cables if you need to replace one of them. The cost of cables depends on the diameter of the cable, and the height of the door.
5Should I purchase Long Life Torsion springs?
Some people often wonder if they should purchase Long Life Torsion springs. If you’re planning to live in your home for many years, or if the previous springs have lasted less than five years, then yes, you should consider Long Life Torsion springs. You may also want to consider a larger spring size. This can be more expensive initially, but it will increase the lifespan of the springs. Most new garage door springs last for 10,000 – 15,000 cycles, but Long Life springs, can last for more than 100,000 cycles. If the springs weigh 20 pounds or more, then you should also purchase extra support brackets. The largest wire you can use on standard 1 and 2” plugs is .295, and springs for doors heavier than 300 pounds, you may need large inside diameters, plugs, support brackets and springs. Consult with a professional for advice.
6What garage door maintenance should I perform?
Repairs and replacements should only be carried out by a professional technician, but there is some routine door maintenance that you can do. 1. The first thing you should do as part of your routine maintenance is to check the cables. They connect the springs to the brackets at the bottom on each side of the door. You’ll need to look for signs of wear, rust, frayed or damage. These cables could break and cause injury. 2. You can inspect the springs themselves by operating the door manually. You can check to see if the door opens as it should. Look for any signs of weight imbalance, or that the springs are having problems with the weight of the door. 3. You should also listen to the door. Any noise could be coming from the rack or rollers. The opener works by pushing the door down on the tracks and rollers, so if they are warped or the bearings are worn, they won’t be able to do their job properly. You may try lubricating the rollers, but if that doesn’t help, then they will probably need to be replaced. 4. If you do lubricate the door, then you should never use a heavy grease. This will harden, collect dirt, and can make any potential problems worse. Instead try a lubricating silicone spray with teflon on the springs, rollers, hinges, drums, track, belt and chain. Also, be sure to clean off any old lubrication before applying a new layer.
7Where should I buy a garage door opener?
Some stores sell DIY garage door openers, which may be cheaper. However, they don’t usually come with a warranty, and the store are usually unable to provide any diagnostics or repairs. Openers sold by garage door companies tend to be higher quality, with a sturdier chain, rail and better resistance to bending and buckling. They last much longer, and the price for the opener and the installation is comparable from both sources.
8How do I get into my garage during a power outage when the remote has been left inside?
Common problems that can prevent people from opening their garage doors include opener failure, power outage, or forgetting the remote inside. The easiest way to solve any of these problems is with an emergency release kit. If you don’t already have one, then one can be installed by drilling a hole in the door. It disconnects the garage door opener and allows manual operation instead.
9What is the difference between right and left wind springs?
As a rule of thumb, the right wind spring is on the left side of the centre support bracket and will have red paint on the winding cone. The left wind spring is on the right side of the centre support bracket and will have black paint on the winding cone. If you only have one spring, then the location will tell you if it’s a left or right spring. If it’s on the left side of the bracket, then it’s right wind. If it’s on the right side of the bracket, then it’s left wind. The only exception to this is if the door has outside lift bottom fixtures, and the cables come off the front of the drums. These doors usually have the right wind spring on the right side, and the left wind spring on the left side.
10Why Should I purchase an insulated garage door?
You could think of your garage door as something similar to a window. You probably end up opening and closing it several times through the day. You may even try to limit how often you use it in winter. Even when you are using the door, you may notice that your garage is cold and frigid. An insulated garage door can help control the temperature in your garage. There are two main reasons why people chose insulated garage doors. Firstly, they’re durable, and lighter than wooden doors. Secondly, they add to the energy efficiency of your home. Any air leakage in your home affects its overall energy efficiency. An insulated door can help keep warmth inside the garage, which helps regulate the overall temperature control of the entire home.
Our Customer Say It Best
5 Stars service. My garage door was not closing and the motor was making a bad sound. I called The Door Master at Noon and they said they would reach out to a technician. 15 minutes later they called me back to let me know someone would come by between 2pm and 4 pm. Dimitri came by looked at it and explained that the gear was not engaged properly. He showed me what to do in case that happens again. I land him the $29.00 for the service call and he refused to take it. Shocking!!! As a woman who knows nothing about garage doors, he could have take advantage but nope. I was so happy that there was nothing major with the door, thought the $29.00 for the service call and the educational session he gave me was worth more than that. I really recommend The Door Master to everyone. 5 Stars service and honest people!!!!

One of the cables on my garage door broke and the wheels were coming off the track. The door was stuck half way open, couldn't get it closed anymore. Called around lunch hour on a Sunday. Received a call back from the local company within 20 minutes. Was able to schedule someone to come on Sunday to fix it. Tim showed up within 2 hours. He replaced the cables and recommended replacing all the wheels with new ones. Tim did all the work quickly and professionally. Now our door glides on the tracks instead of banging and scraping. I highly recommend using this company for garage door issues. Prices are very reasonable.

Recently had a spring changed; Tim was very professional and took the time to explain to me how to maintain the door.Tim also suggested we change the wheels on our doors for a much quieter door, Before paying for the work he wanted me to test the door a couple times and if I was not satisfied he would put the old wheels back on needless to say the door is extremely quiet; I am very satisfied with the work.

We just had Al come to the house to re-attach the garage door cable after I tried to adjust it on my own. After an hour I managed to completely unhinge the cables and ended up with the door wedged in a partially open position. It took Al, the technician, under half an hour to fix the door and adjust it so that my wife could easily open it. Al was knowledgeable, professional and polite. I will be calling him back next month to install a garage door opener.
