Automatic Garage Door Safety

automatic garage door

You might not initially consider it, but an automatic garage door can pose great danger.  Automatic garage doors are incredibly heavy and under considerable tension. Having a garage door fall on someone can cause serious injury or even death.  To prevent any tragedies, consider these garage door safety tips.

Educate Your Children about Garage Door Safety

Children can become fascinated with automatic garage doors, but they are definitely not playthings.  You should teach your children how a garage door works and how to operate it properly, but you should also stress the fact that it can be very dangerous.  Education will go a long way in keeping your children safe.

Inspect Regularly

You should give your garage door a thorough visual inspection every month.  Look for worn springs, pulleys, and rollers, or any other signs of deterioration – including loud noises.  If you do find problems, contact a garage door expert. As previously mentioned, automatic garage doors are under considerable tension which can cause severe injury.  You should also check the door’s auto-reverse system every month. This mechanism will cause the door to open if it comes into contact with anything while closing.

Vacation Mode

If you’re leaving your home for an extended period of time, consider unplugging the garage door opener.  This will ensure that no one will be able to use the opener to break into your garage and house. Some garage door opening systems have a lock mode which will render any remote controls inoperable.

Theft Prevention

Do not leave your garage door opener remote control in your vehicle.  Thieves have been known to steal it along with your vehicle registration to gain access to your home before you’ve even realized your car has been broken into.  Another method used by thieves is to intercept your remote control’s wireless code to open your garage door with their own device. Newer systems use rolling codes to prevent this.  If your system is older, change your remote control access codes regularly.

Read Your Owner’s Manual

Your automatic garage door’s owner’s manual will give you a lot more Garage Door Safety information that’s specific to your system.  Read your manual to find out about your door’s safety features and any precautions that might be necessary.
